S&P 500: Event vs. Market

SPY closed at 769.28 today (-0.25%), putting SPX near 7,655 — up ~11.8% versus the 2025 close of 6,845.50 (per The Guardian's year-end report). Flipping the year red now needs a ~10.6% drawdown over four months. Lognormal math brackets the index-implied probability of a positive 2026 at ~90% on 15-vol and ~83% on 20-vol.

The event-venue side is thinner than we'd like. A social snapshot has Kalshi traders at ~84% for the S&P staying green, and early-August coverage (CNBC, Stocktwits) had Kalshi at ~92% for SPX ≥7,800 and ~73% for ≥8,000 — a notably bullish tail. But the live year-end book was not retrievable this pass: the INXY/INXZ series matched with no open markets inside the 120-day scan window, so the December contract is unretrieved, not absent.

Variant perception: mild at best — Kalshi YES sits at the cheap end of the index-implied band, the familiar event-venue discount, but the spread is only a few points, likely inside fees, and our Kalshi print is dated. This is close to a stated non-edge until the live book is in hand.

Watch: pulling the year-end book once it enters the scan window (~early September), September jobs/CPI/FOMC (dates not sourced this pass), and whether realized vol stays low enough to hold the index-implied read near 90%.
